Rest Stop Stained Glass is a painting in my Entropy series. Generally, the paintings in this series are distinguished by the method, which is to first create what I think of as an “armature”: that is, an underlying support. Normally a term used in three dimensional work, my “armature” here consists of the initial lines drawn – whether by finger painting, marking, brushing. The work is completed by colouring in.
For Rest Stop Stained Glass, I was inspired by the scenery on a road trip in Arizona, and so I started with an armature of horizontal lines. The lines and colours represent, in an abstracted way, the layers of landscape that I observed: desert floor, red mesa, and distant hills and sky.
