Coulees by

Curve of the Earth and Coulees are part of a small group of large paintings exploring the prairie landscape in winter. Driving fast through a frozen, plain, catching shapes and images from the corner of my eye, feeling the earth fall away white, punctuated by the architecture of the land where it is exposed by the wind. I use my brush to evoke the planes of the landscape, and carve through the layers of oil and cold wax with a palette knife or the sharp edge of a conte crayon to explore linear elements. The scale of these paintings makes me reach as I work, just as the winter landscape makes me small.
