Autumn, 30th Avenue by

I have always painted the world around me, but it’s the experience of moving through it, of being part of it, that interests me. We catch things in our peripheral vision; we notice some details and forget others; we crest a hill or turn a corner to see the earth spread out before us and we catch our breath, caught in the beauty of the moment. I’m drawn to textures and patterns, to tracks in snow, to tangles of branches…and I use these things to create paintings that balance between representational and abstract, between portrait of the land and a map of it, between painting and drawing. The surfaces are rich with thick oil and cold wax, carved through with a palette knife or the sharp edge of a conte crayon.
