Marjorie Mae Broadhead
My school experience was not complete until I walked into the art room and found it was there my world made sense. The mystery of colour, paint, lines and texture resonated with something deep inside of me and I finally felt I could communicate what I was feeling. Years later, after my kids were mostly grown and independent, I became aware of the deep need to express myself again… with paint. So, I started taking art classes through Chinook Learning. I was hooked. Immediately. This led to many more in person and online courses as I fully embraced the opportunity to learn more about my passion.
I love, love colour, vibrant and dramatic colour! From my perspective, it is one of the best qualities of my work. I have chosen acrylic as my preferred medium because I can work ‘fast and furiously’ with it. Its quick dry time allows me to add layer upon layer as I paint a new conversation on canvas. As a fresh work comes to life under my brushes, I enjoy the excitement and anticipation it brings!
Every painting is a journey of discovery; whether I am capturing the light reflecting in our garden or conveying the elegance of a bloom, my aim is to communicate the emotion of the moment. I want the story I am telling to be as engaging to my audience as it is to me.
I have also enjoyed mentoring individuals and instructing small groups of budding artists and have been thrilled to watch as they take courage to place paint on canvas! My goal is to continue to develop my art as a loose and painterly expression of the world I encounter.
I have been an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists since 2016 and was recently (July 2020) awarded SFCA status by the Federation “In Recognition of Extraordinary Achievement in the Field of the Visual Fine Arts.”
