Emily Bickell grew up in Whitby, on the shore of Lake Ontario, Canada. In 1998 she received an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts with a studio specialization in painting and printmaking from the University of Waterloo.
Emily says of Riven: The cold waters of beautiful Lake Temiskaming in Northern Ontario inspired this painting. The surface reflects trees and sky, and a glimpse into the clear water hints at plant life below the surface.
Emily uses oil paint to depict serene surfaces of water that “float between abstraction and realism.”
Emily says of Accord: The cold waters of beautiful Lake Temiskaming in Northern Ontario inspired this painting. One of my favourite lakes to paint, the water is rich with tannins and appears blue, golden, violet or sienna, depending on the light.
Emily describes the inspiration of The Gulf: The wake of our ship created beautiful abstract patterns in the ocean as we passed through the Gulf of Mexico.
