Artist Spotlight: Chester Lees

Is there anything more beautiful than the landscapes of Alberta? Our next artist spotlight is on Calgarian artist Chester Lees! Chester focuses on depicting the vibrant and expansive landscapes of Alberta. Read more about Chester in our newest blog.

Chester was born in Wales and trained as a graphic designer. Her move to the Canadian prairies shifted her focus to depicting beautiful Alberta skies and colourful plains. In many of her paintings you’ll see the famous and expansive skies of Alberta painted in vivid yellows, blues, and greys.

Chester is well travelled, and you see this reflected in her artwork! There are Celtic inspired details in her artwork as well as flora, fauna, and landscapes. Her work has evolved to focusing on large scale paintings and murals.

Chester says of her technique:

“(her) technique of heavily textured grasses against smooth vast skies place her work on the border between realistic and abstract, and she has produced many commissioned mural-sized pieces on these themes.”

Chester is an active member of the Alberta Society of Artists, the Canadian Federation of Artists and a recipient of Global Television’s Woman of Vision. She has spent over twenty years providing Artist in Residency programs to many Calgary institutions and schools. Now working from her studio in Turner Valley, she continues with her love of landscape and nature as themes for her work.
